Court orders end to Rotterdam dockworkers’ strike until Friday

Court Orders End to Rotterdam Dockworkers' Strike

Dockworkers at the Port of Rotterdam returned to work on Monday after a court ordered a temporary suspension of their strike, which had disrupted cargo operations for nearly a week.

The strike, which began on Wednesday, was called by dockworkers employed by ILS and Matrans, who are seeking a new collective labor agreement. The workers, known as sjorders or lashers, are responsible for fastening and unfastening containers.

The court's decision allows for a temporary pause in the strike to clear backlogs, but also leaves open the possibility of the strike resuming on Friday.

Talks between FNV and the two companies were scheduled to resume on Sunday morning, with FNV having lowered its demand for a 7 percent pay increase to 6.5 percent. However, ILS and Matrans maintain that even the revised proposal is too high.

Author's summary: Dockworkers' strike at Port of Rotterdam halted until Friday.
