Rare Calico Lobster Makes Debut

A rare 1-in-20-million calico lobster, named Jackie (short for jack-o'-lantern), has made her debut at Northeastern University's Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.

Jackie owes her unique colors to a mixture of chemical compounds. She is joining other Halloween-themed animals, such as spiders, bats, and fungi, as a seasonal ambassador.

According to the Marine Science Center outreach coordinator Sierra Munoz, the odds of catching a crustacean like Jackie are about one-in-20 million.

Jackie is even more rare than the center's other recent star, Neptune the blue lobster, which has odds of one-in-two million. She was caught off the coast of Massachusetts by lobsterman Mike Tufts, who operates out of Gloucester.

Author's summary: A rare calico lobster named Jackie debuted at a marine center.
