David Bown, chief executive of Harrogate Theatre, has appealed to local businesses for support to help the theatre overcome a "post-pandemic wobble".
The theatre, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary, is running a campaign to raise £125,000 this year. Mr Bown outlined the theatre's financial problems at a meeting of Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce, highlighting the loss of its status as an Arts Council England national portfolio organisation in April 2023, resulting in a reduction of funding by about £140,000 a year.
There was "precious little public funding compared to 25 years ago"
The theatre has also experienced a "tricky transition" from Harrogate Borough Council to North Yorkshire Council in 2023. As a charity-run venue, Harrogate (White Rose) Theatre Trust Ltd, operating in a council-owned building, Mr Bown urged people not to underestimate the theatre's wider economic impact on the town.
The theatre's campaign aims to raise essential funds to ensure its continued operation and contribution to the local economy.
