In a victory for Māori representation, Pita Tipene has been elected to Northland Regional Council, winning one of the two Te Raki Māori seats in the 2025 local body elections.
His success marks a continuation of his decades-long commitment to iwi, hapū, and hapori across Tai Tokerau, and signals renewed expectation for kaupapa Māori leadership in regional governance.
Tipene is already well known in Northland, having served as co-chair of the council’s Te Ruarangi Māori / Council Working Party for more than a decade.
He is also former chair of the Waitangi National Trust, and has held leadership roles within iwi, marae governance, and Māori housing organisations.
In the lead up to the election, Tipene campaigned on a platform of environmental stewardship, Māori-led solutions, resource protection, and strengthening community resilience.
