Proposal for New Acute Psychiatric Unit Location
A Galway councillor has suggested that a planned 40-bed inpatient acute psychiatric unit would be better located in Ballinasloe rather than Roscommon.
The unit is intended to replace the existing facility at Roscommon University Hospital, but Councillor Donagh Killilea questioned the decision to build it on the Roscommon campus.
The decision contradicts HSE policy, especially when there is a fully functioning 24-hour A&E department attached to Portiuncula University Hospital.
Councillor Killilea cited staff retention issues and the lack of a full-time A&E department at Roscommon University Hospital as reasons to consider an alternative location.
