Delhi’s posh colonies show how to privatise public space – one footpath at a time

Privatization of Public Space in Delhi's Elite Neighborhoods

Delhi's upscale neighborhoods, such as Jor Bagh and Sarita Vihar, have seen a rise in the privatization of public space, with permanent concrete guard cabins, flower gardens, and parked vehicles occupying walkways meant for pedestrians.

In these areas, guard booths outside houses are common, but unlike other neighborhoods, they are permanent concrete structures, rather than wooden booths with rolling tyres.

"Where such rich people live, they have to make sure they have enough security, hence us and the security guard booths",

says Kishore*, a guard sitting in one such booth in Jor Bagh. Jor Bagh is an elite residential neighborhood developed in the mid-20th century, known for its charm and elegance, with broad streets, well-maintained parks, and convenient connectivity to the Delhi Metro.
