Since 1991, the University of Chicago's Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics has connected Chicago Public Schools students with renowned astronomers and physicists.
The Space Explorers program, run by the institute, initially focused on introducing high school students to cosmology and related research. Over time, it has expanded to cover various areas of science, allowing students to explore different interests.
Students participate in hands-on challenges, such as building model rockets, boats, and cars, and designing egg drops. Through these activities, they develop problem-solving skills and learn to tweak their designs week after week.
The program's essence is open-ended problem-solving, where students learn through experimentation and exploration.
