No wolves allowed?  Montrose eyes novel approach to halt ‘non-native’ species at county line

Montrose County Proposes Ordinance to Ban Non-Native Species

A proposed ordinance in Montrose County aims to prevent the introduction of non-native species, including the Canadian gray wolf.

The ordinance, No. 2025-01, would prohibit the introduction, support, or habitat establishment of non-native animal species, with fines of up to $1,000 per day for non-compliance.

“We're introducing an apex predator into our communities and (into) an environment that literally can endanger endangered species that are federally protected,”

said Montrose County Commissioner Scott Mijares. The ordinance defines non-native species as those not historically present in the county in the past 100 years, specifically targeting the Canadian Gray Wolf (Canis lupus).
