Analysts predict that gas prices will soon drop below $3.00 a gallon, a first in four years.
According to AAA and GasBuddy, lower prices at the pump are expected due to a drop in oil prices, below $60 a barrel, and a decrease in gasoline demand with the end of the summer travel season.
The national average has dropped more than 5 cents to $3.057 a gallon, according to AAA. This is a significant decrease from last year's average of $3.203 a gallon at this time.
Cheaper winter-blend gasoline is also contributing to the downward trend, which is expected to continue in the coming weeks.
Lower gasoline demand and cheaper winter-blend gasoline are driving lower prices at the pump.
Average gas prices have been steadily decreasing, with a week ago's average at $3.110 and one month ago's average at $3.186 a gallon.
