Alaska's outbreak of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, has subsided, but it had significant impacts on residents, according to state data.
The outbreak, which occurred from April 2024 to 2025, reported 679 confirmed or probable cases, with 74 infants under 1 year old infected, most of whom were not up to date on their vaccinations.
Twenty-nine patients were hospitalized, mostly infants under 1 year old, and one unvaccinated baby died during the outbreak.
Pertussis is caused by a bacterial infection and is highly contagious.
