DOE Directs FERC to Accelerate Large Load Interconnection
Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has directed the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to propose rules for faster interconnection of large loads, including data centers.
The proposed rule would allow customers to file joint, co-located load and generation interconnection requests, reducing study times and grid upgrade costs.
Secretary Wright argues it will reduce the time needed for additional generation and power to come online.
According to Secretary Wright, U.S. electricity demand is expected to grow at an "extraordinary" pace, mostly due to the rapid growth of large loads, with NERC noting that demand growth is now higher than at any point in the past two decades.
