The Eastern Illinois University Student Senate recently heard a presentation on organ and tissue donations from Shadaye Hunnicutt, community outreach specialist at Gift of Hope.
Gift of Hope is an organ and tissue donor network that assists in registering people for after-death donations in Illinois and northwestern Indiana.
According to Hunnicutt, the organization has helped save over 30,000 lives with organ donations.
A national database, the United Network for Organ Sharing, currently has 105,000 people on the waiting list, with 4,500 of them in Illinois, and a person is added to the list every nine minutes.
