Waterford native Michael Whelan embarked on a 3,000-kilometre journey from Osh, Kyrgyzstan to Karachi, Pakistan, via the Silk Road, an age-old trade route.
Over two months, the 69-year-old faced freezing temperatures, mountainous ascents, and low oxygen levels, but his approach was to "just slow down" and take things as they come.
"You just have to slow down... You have to just take it as it comes."
Unlike younger travelers, Michael didn't set strict targets or itineraries, instead choosing to adapt to the journey's challenges.
His journey was a testament to the power of flexibility and patience in the face of adversity.
