Editorial: Solidarity with the Indiana Daily Student

The Indiana Daily Student is facing opposition from its own university, Indiana University. In anticipation of the university's homecoming, administrators attempted to restrict the publication of news stories in the homecoming print edition.

The Indiana Daily Student had already seen a reduction in print editions, with remaining editions focused on special themes. On October 14, Jim Rodenbush, Director of Student Media, was fired for refusing to comply with the university's order. Shortly after, the university announced the complete elimination of print editions for the Indiana Daily Student.

In a show of solidarity, Purdue University's student paper, The Exponent, printed 3,000 copies of a special edition featuring editorials from the Indiana Daily Student and distributed them on IU's campus on October 17.

Student media is essential to campus communities.

The actions taken by Purdue University's student paper demonstrate the importance of standing together in support of journalism and student media.

Author's summary: University restricts student paper.
