Santa Barbara City Planning Commission Puzzled by Paseo Nuevo Proposal

The plan to redevelop Paseo Nuevo shopping mall was criticized by members of the City of Santa Barbara’s Planning Commission on October 9.

Commission members pointed out problems with the city's plan to use publicly owned land, which includes building 233 units of market-rate housing on the Macy's side of the mall and 80 units of affordable housing on a city parking lot.

The City Council will decide whether to approve a development agreement in December, but the Planning Commission had several concerns and questions about the proposal.

The commission's review may be the only chance to examine the project before the City Council considers approval.
