Stop Overloading Older Adults with Medicare Plan Choices

Older adults are facing an overwhelming number of Medicare plan options. Nearly 69 million Americans, who are either disabled or 65 and older, receive health insurance through Medicare.

Most beneficiaries must select a private insurance plan to receive their medical benefits, prescription drug coverage, or supplemental coverage. During the eight-week enrollment period, they will receive numerous insurance company mailings, urging them to switch plans for 2026.

Switching plans could save beneficiaries hundreds — perhaps thousands — of dollars per year, depending on how their insurer has changed their plan and how their coverage needs have changed.

However, a KFF survey found that nearly 7 in 10 Medicare beneficiaries did not compare plans for their 2022 coverage, and most won't switch or even look for a better plan.

Author's summary: Overloading Medicare beneficiaries with plan choices is overwhelming.
