A person on Long Island has been infected with the Chikungunya virus, which is most common in tropical and subtropical regions and rarely fatal.
- The virus causes fever, joint pain and swelling, headaches, muscle pain, and rashes.

- The Aedes albopictus mosquito, which transmits Chikungunya, is present in parts of downstate New York.
