UFS Paid R1.5m for Non-Existent Student Accommodation

The University of Free State (UFS) paid R1.5m to Motlatsi Nelson Khalane for student accommodation that did not exist.

Khalane, 31, received the payments for two years without the university verifying the existence of the accommodation.

The allegations were that Khalane, through his company, had submitted an application to the University of the Free State’s Qwaqwa Campus to be considered for the provision of student accommodation.

According to W/O Fikiswa Matoti, spokesperson of the Hawks in Free State, Khalane claimed to have 215 rooms available, but the university found no rooms built on the two stands provided.
