Six US companies will spend at least $350 million to manufacture medical gowns for the Strategic National Stockpile.
This move comes years after doctors and nurses faced shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic. The stockpile was depleted just weeks into the crisis due to lack of restocking in previous years.
According to assistant secretary Dawn O’Connell, the new gowns are part of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response's efforts to restock the emergency coffers.
The purchase aims to shore up the personal protective equipment in the stockpile.
