President Donald Trump announced a meeting with Putin's advisors ahead of a summit in Budapest aimed at resolving the war between Russia and Ukraine.
On October 16, 2025, President Trump stated that he and Russian leader Vladimir Putin agreed to send high-level advisors to preliminary meetings, led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, ahead of a planned summit in Budapest, Hungary.
“At the conclusion of the call, we agreed that there will be a meeting of our High Level Advisors, next week… Putin and I will then meet in an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ War, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end,”
Trump described the telephone conversation as “very productive,” noting that the discussion also touched on recent developments in the Middle East.
