The Flotillas Trying to Reach Gaza

The Flotillas Trying to Reach Gaza

High-sea solidarity missions have a long history in Palestine, and they are more than just a stunt.

A grassroots humanitarian-aid mission, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, set sail from Spain, Italy, Tunisia, and Greece in late summer, carrying supplies like rice, lentils, baby formula, and basic medicine.

The flotilla, consisting of 42 ships and 462 activists from over 44 countries, sailed towards Gaza in the dark, despite the dire need and bad odds, as the Israeli military has intercepted or attacked all but a few of the dozens of humanitarian-aid ships that have tried to reach Gaza over the nearly two decades of Israel’s blockade.

Author's summary: A humanitarian flotilla attempts to reach Gaza.
