A 17-mile stretch of the I-5 freeway in Southern California was shut down on Saturday due to a military event involving live ammunition at Camp Pendleton.
The event was part of the U.S. Marine Corps 250th anniversary celebration. The freeway closure, which lasted until Saturday afternoon, affected both sides of the freeway from Harbor Drive in Oceanside to Basilone Road near San Onofre.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the military event involved
live ammunition being discharged by the federal government over the freeway.
Video footage provided by California officials showed live munitions being fired near the freeway on Friday, apparently as a practice run.
