Gauff's victory marks her 22nd main-draw win in China over the past three years, the most of any WTA player in that span.
In the final, Gauff initially led 3-0, but Pegula leveled at 4-4. Gauff then broke Pegula to win the first set 6-4.
In the second set, Pegula took a 3-0 lead, but Gauff recovered to win 7-5.
Gauff dropped just 16 games en route to the final and ended Pegula's streak of eight consecutive three-set matches.
