Raw Sewage Crisis in Khayelitsha
Families living in shacks between Khayelitsha and Makhaza have been forced to abandon their homes due to raw sewage flowing through the streets and into their homes for the past two weeks.
The City of Cape Town has identified a blockage in the main sewer line as the cause of the problem, with manholes overflowing and sewage flowing into homes.
- Emergency contractors are working to excavate and reach the blockage, which is five metres below ground.
- Pumps are being used to contain the overflow and mitigate the damage.
“Today, I have come to collect my dishes, which are inside a cupboard,” said Phumeza Mazobotshwana, a resident of the affected area.
Affected residents from the Wetland informal settlement protested on Baden Powell Road, highlighting the urgent need for a solution to the crisis.
