Owens: Stones and change
Recently, I visited Albany, New York, for a brief trip over the weekend. I had never been to the capital city of the Empire State, so I wandered without a plan to see the city. I walked along State Street, Albany's original "Main Street" and one of the two oldest streets in the city.
At the end of State Street, I found myself in the Empire State Plaza, where multiple government buildings are located. One of those buildings is the New York State Capitol, where the state legislature gathers. The building was completed in 1899 at a cost of $25 million, approximately $794 million in today's currency, making it the most expensive government building of its time.
The project began in 1867, utilizing three architectural teams to design and erect the building over its 32-year construction period.
