Timor-Leste Joins ASEAN as 11th Member
Timor-Leste has been officially admitted to ASEAN, becoming its 11th member. The country first applied for membership in 2011 and received in-principle approval in 2022.
The announcement was made on October 26 at the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This marks a significant milestone for both Timor-Leste and ASEAN, amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and global economic uncertainty.
As
the first country to join the grouping since Cambodia's admission in 1999, Timor-Leste's admission expands ASEAN's ranks for the first time in 26 years.
