Prima retinal prosthesis tackles advanced macular degeneration

Prima Retinal Prosthesis for Advanced Macular Degeneration

The Prima retinal prosthesis, developed by Stanford Medicine, has shown promising results in restoring vision to individuals with advanced macular degeneration.

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 27 out of 32 participants regained the ability to read a year after receiving the device.

The Prima device is a "next-generation miniaturized sub-retinal implant."

The technology was initially developed at the lab of Daniel Palanker and underwent early clinical development by Pixium Vision, before being acquired by Science Corporation in 2024.

Author's summary: Prima prosthesis restores vision in macular degeneration patients.
