Indonesia’s Precariat Protests Call for Stability

Rising discontent among Indonesia’s precariat underscores the need for long-term economic solutions to reduce instability at the grassroots.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto delivered his first State of the Nation address on 15 August 2025, summarizing the achievements from his first 299 days in office, boasting of the country’s low unemployment and poverty rates.

However, two weeks later, this narrative was debunked by waves of protests in Jakarta that swiftly spread nationwide, with people speaking out against economic inequality, labour insecurity and political complacency.

A tragic incident occurred on 28 August 2025, when an ojol (ride-hailing motorcycle) driver was crushed by an armoured police vehicle during protests near the parliament compound in Jakarta.

The video of the ojol driver’s tragic death went viral and fostered solidarity among approximately 7 million fellow ojol drivers and marginalised youth nationwide.

Author's summary: Protests in Indonesia call for economic stability.
