United States: Organising to Resist Mass Immigrant Raids

Los Angeles County has voted to declare a state of emergency in response to ongoing immigration raids by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

According to reports, the streets of many Los Angeles neighborhoods, usually bustling with activity, now lay empty and deserted. This scene is becoming increasingly common in immigrant communities across the United States.

The cause of this desertion is the dramatic increase in Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids under the Donald Trump administration. Dozens of agents arrive in unmarked cars, wearing rifles and bulletproof vests, and increasingly, ski masks. They often refuse to display badges or identify themselves, adding to the fear and uncertainty of their raids.

Undocumented workers are handcuffed, thrown into rented vans and whisked away.

Grassroots activists and communities are organizing to resist these mass immigrant raids, with Jonathan Cannard documenting the crisis and response.

Author's summary: Mass immigrant raids spark resistance in the US.
