Dredging equipment has returned to the Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, California, as part of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project.
The project, which is typically done every other year, was delayed last year due to permitting issues. Its purpose is to remove sand from the mouth of the harbor to facilitate boat traffic and to transport sand via pipeline to the beach in Port Hueneme, which has been impacted by erosion.
The dredging is expected to be completed early next year. Meanwhile, sea lions have been spotted in the area, posing a challenge to crews working on new dock construction. Despite efforts to deter them with poles and colorful tape, the sea lions continue to sun themselves on the new docks near the harbor mouth.
As
it isn't easy keeping them off anything, the presence of sea lions is becoming a problem in the area.
The project aims to improve navigation and mitigate erosion, with completion anticipated for early next year.
