The Hachette imprint, launched in 1950 as the publishing arm of a psychoanalysis book club, has grown into a leading voice in psychology, politics, and history.
Basic Books Group president and publisher Lara Heimert recalled her mother's reaction when she told her she was going to work at the Hachette division's flagship imprint in 2005:
My mother said, Oh, they're the most important publisher in the world!Heimert's mother, who worked in psychology, admired the imprint due to its long history of publishing Freud's works, a mainstay of Basic's backlist since its inception.
