CSR in India: Stop counting rupees, start measuring impact
The real question is no longer “How much was spent?” but “What difference did it make?”

India became the first country to legislate corporate social responsibility (CSR) in 2013, blending profit with purpose.
- Companies with a net worth of ₹500 crore or more
- Or a turnover of ₹1,000 crore or more
- Or net profit of ₹5 crore or more must spend 2% of their average net profits on social development
In a country with stretched public funds and vast needs, the promise was enormous: tap into corporate wealth to accelerate progress in education, health, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.

A decade on, corporate India spends over ₹35,000 crore annually under the CSR mandate.
