Integration of Health Services Vital for Sustaining HIV Gains
Amidst dwindling donor funding in the health sector, integration of services remains crucial to ensuring that the progress made in the fight against HIV is not reversed, according to Douglas Bosire, acting CEO of the National Syndemic Disease Control Council (NSDCC).
The statement was made during the Africa Health Systems Forum 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya, themed ‘The Case for Sustainable Health Financing and Africa’s Way Forward.’
Donor funding has significantly contributed to Kenya’s progress in HIV treatment and prevention, with notable achievements including:
- 98% of the approximately 1.4 million people living with HIV knowing their status as of 2024
- 98% on treatment
- 94% achieving viral suppression
However, a stop order implemented by the US government in early 2025 nearly threatened this progress, highlighting the importance of sustainable funding.
The US, besides the Global Fund, is the second largest contributor to HIV funding in Kenya.
