Zohran Mamdani Makes History as New York City's Youngest Mayor
Zohran Mamdani, son of filmmaker Mira Nair, has been elected as mayor of New York City, becoming the city's youngest mayor at 34 years old.
Mamdani, a Democrat and self-described democratic socialist, ran a grassroots campaign focused on affordability, housing, and public transit. His platform called for measures such as:
- rent freezes
- fare-free buses
- a higher minimum wage
- greater taxes on the wealthy
Mamdani defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa by a comfortable margin, setting historic firsts as the first Muslim and first South Asian to hold the office.
